Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to deal with the fascist “trucker” convoy has been met with a mix of support, criticism, and confusion. While Trudeau and his government claim that this is necessary to respond to the situation, many of us on the left remain skeptical, having witnessed first-hand the power of police protest control in the absence of the Emergencies Act. So why did the federal government take such a drastic step? First, the border blockades at Coutts in Alberta and the Ambassador Bridge in Ontario were effective enough that they began to hurt sections of big capital. Officials in Michigan used the opportunity to champion Buy-American initiatives. In Windsor, a coalition of auto companies was able to obtain an injunction against the blockade.

However strongly we leftists may disagree with the objectives, values or opinions of participants in the “freedom convoy,” if we support the government’s use of emergency powers in these circumstances, then it is only a matter of time before the government turns those extraordinary powers against us. According to lawyer, author and activist Dimitri Lascaris, that is the last thing we need.

The Official Opposition leader is facing questions after stopping to cheer on an anti-carbon tax convoy camp near the border between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, where he accused the prime minister of lying about everything.

CTVNews.ca spoke with more than half a dozen Ottawa residents who live at the centre of where the trucker protests took place, and they shared very similar experiences on the lingering mental-health effects from the Freedom Convoy’s occupation of their streets and neighbourhood.
