Procrastination is almost universally framed as a character problem. You lack discipline. You are lazy. You need better systems, a stricter schedule, a productivity app. The advice assumes the problem is a failure of will, and the solution is more of it.A research team at Southwest University in China just published a brain imaging study in NeuroImage, one of the most selective journals in neuroscience, that reframes the entire question. They recruited 1,189 undergraduate students and scanned their resting brains using functional MRI. They also measured each participant's history of childhood trauma, their general anxiety levels, their capacity for self-control, and their tendency to procrastinate chronically. Then they built predictive models to map the neural pathways connecting early adverse experience to adult delay behavior. The brain scans of people who reported higher childhood trauma showed measurable differences in the connectivity of the frontoparietal network, the salience network, and the cerebellum. These same connectivity patterns predicted higher trait anxiety and lower self-control. Those two variables, together, mediated the entire relationship between childhood trauma and chronic procrastination. The study replicated the finding in an independent validation group of 429 participants before publishing.Chronic procrastination, in this dataset, was not a discipline problem. It was a neurological fingerprint of early adverse experience, visible in the brain's resting-state connectivity decades after the original events.

Post-traumatic stress disorder: alleviating flashbacks by playing Tetris
Post-traumatic stress disorder: alleviating flashbacks by playing Tetris
A behavioral intervention procedure including the computer game Tetris could help people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to alleviate involuntarily recurring visual memories of traumatic experiences. Following an intervention involving playing Tetris, the number of flashbacks for the stressful events decreased.
