The Qi Keeps The Blood Within the Vessels: The Story of Gui Pi Tang
This article is presented in an effort to help practitioners avoid a common error: linking a symptom to a traditional diagnostic category without considering the totality of the available evidence. The discussion, which eventually focuses on the symptom of uterine bleeding, is presented because I have noted that many Western practitioners of Chinese medicine automatically assign cases of uterine bleeding to the diagnostic category of qi failing to keep the blood within the vessels. Even when a woman presents some signs of qi deficiency (e.g., failures in the transformation and transportation of food essence, or weakness and pallor), I believe one should not necessarily assign to this observation the interpretation that this deficiency is the immediate and principal cause of bleeding.
