Jonathan Watts argues that false hope can function like an anaesthetic: distant targets, miracle technologies and endless promises that everything will somehow work out, while emissions rise, ecosystems unravel and governments delay the action required now.
Research pubkushed in the science journal Nature shows climate related distress is linked with greater collective action. Fear, grief and anger are not automatically paralysing. In a crisis this severe, they can be entirely rational responses that push people to act.
Meanwhile, some Indigenous peoples living closest to ecological breakdown do not even organise their worldview around “hope” in the way industrial societies do. Anthropologist Ana Maria Machado says the Yanomami have no direct word for it, focusing instead on relationships and responsibilities in the present.
That contrast is brutal. Those most exposed to ecological destruction are being forced to deal with reality now, while the societies driving much of it keep selling themselves comforting stories about the future.
The problem is not hope grounded in action. It is placebo hope: reassurance without transformation. We do not need more comforting narratives. We need less denial, less delay and far more action.".
