New Housing development aimed at reducing Toronto’s Indigenous housing crisis - The Turtle Island News
By Alex Murray Writer A new 100-unit, Indigenous-led supportive housing development that could help de-escalate the Indigenous housing crisis in Toronto was announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Toronto mayor Olivia Chow on August 5. Miziwe Biik Development Corporation (MBDC) will help Toronto find an Indigenous developer for the project. MBDC has been working with the City since 2020 on initiatives like this to improve housing outcomes for Indigenous residents. “Addressing the significant need for affordable and culturally appropriate housing for Indigenous peoples living off-reserve requires sustained investment and collaboration across all orders of government,” MBDC told Turtle Island News. MBDC said funding from all levels of government is crucial to pushing Indigenous housing solutions. An Alberta judge has dismissed O'Leary Digital's attempt to strike Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation's judicial review of a water licence connected to the $70-billion Wonder Valley data centre near Grande Prairie. The licence belongs to the MD of Greenview not O'Leary Digital and the underlying consultation challenge will proceed.
