In this episode of The Econoclasts Yanis Varoufakis dissects the rise of Right-wing populist parties across the West, arguing that the weakness of the liberal establishment and the assistance of big business is risking a repeat of the 1930s.

For example, before we think about the sun as a massive star, a stellar body among trillions of other stars, as 93 million miles from the earth and warping the vicinity of space around it, we delight in its warmth, we plan for family events around that warmth, we enjoy fitness on sunny days; and sunny days are days for falling in love and playing outside. We also eagerly anticipate watching sunsets, gathering in social groups to do so. In short, we move and have our being within the warmth of the sun, not as an object of scientific knowledge, but as something experienced in the everyday world of our meaningful social activities - activities that are as regular and unnoticed as breathing or blinking.
My point is twofold. First, to restrict the problem of race to conceptual analysis full stop is too limiting. Second, an exploration of race as something that is actually lived takes one beyond what is thought about in the abstract, to the level of how race is meaningfully lived as an embodied and messy phenomenon. I realize that part of the aim of conceptual analysis is precisely to unpack the messiness of race. Yet this messiness reveals its complexity - complexity that often transcends and outstrips abstract conceptual analysis.
Indeed, before race becomes a self-consciously philosophical problem, we are already raced; we are already hurt by race, injured by it, celebrate it, fight because of it, lose our freedoms over it, maintain our privilege because of it, differentiate ourselves from others based on it, enslave others because of it, decimate others because of it - our perceptions are already shaped by it, our fears are already formed by it, who would choose to love is already mediated by it."

there are two lists of 14 characteristics each which outline the characteristics of fascism and they are presented here. the first is from Lawrence Britt, the second is from Umberto Eco. The lists have considerable overlap, Britt’s is more accessible perhaps and Eco’s has more depth but comes across somewhat more abstract. I also recommend reading Michael Parenti’s Blackshirts and Reds which was the first thing I read which described the economic systems undergirding fascism and I think starts to make it clear why fascism seems soooooo familiar to us.".
Hitler banned the German Communist Party soon after he became Chancellor. The first concentration camp in 1933 was specifically for leftists. The Nazis called communism; a far-left system “Jewish Bolshevism” and they invaded the USSR a far-left government in 1941. But sure Hitler was far-left.

Analysis of 348 ancient genomes spanning 45,000 years shows dark skin was the norm across Europe until roughly 3,000 years ago. Pale skin, the trait most associated with European ancestry, only became dominant in the Iron Age.
