Tupac Shakur was murdered 29 years ago today. His status as a cultural icon is beyond dispute, but the legend that’s built up around his tragically short life has often overshadowed the radical political outlook that shaped his work.

During his imprisonment, he encountered Martin Sostre, whose ideas profoundly influenced his political transformation.
In Anarchism and The Black Revolution, Ervin outlines community councils, workers’ federations, labor organizing, cooperatives, mutual aid networks, self-defense units, community self-management, and decentralized revolutionary structures designed to confront capitalism, white supremacy, and state power simultaneously.
His critique extends beyond capitalism alone. Ervin repeatedly challenges centralized authority, the vanguard model, and the belief that liberation can be achieved by seizing state power and placing it in the hands of a revolutionary elite. Honestly, while reading Ervin, it’s hard not to hear echoes of Mikhail Bakunin.
Both argued that revolutionary movements risk creating new ruling classes and rejected the idea that freedom could be delivered in a top-down format as both insisted that liberation required dismantling hierarchy—not reproducing it under a different banner.
Ervin is still alive today and remains associated with Memphis, Tennessee and both his personal accounts and writings remain to be poignant amongst Black Anarchist literature and the broader scope of anarchist thought and theory.

A more united Africa, he suggests, would be better positioned to negotiate stronger deals and defend its interests on the global stage.

dravonrangel on May 31, 2026: "MAGA dressed in spirituality might be one of the greatest threats to America because it teaches people to confuse hatred with holiness, racism with righteousness, sexism with tradition, classism with merit, and obedience with faith.
You cannot sage your house and still support policies that tear families apart. You cannot quote God while cheering for children being buried under bombs. You cannot call yourself “awake” while defending a man who has built power by attacking Black people, immigrants, women, LGBTQ people, the poor, and anyone asking this country to be more humane.
Trump did not expose America by accident. He revealed how many people were never fighting for freedom. They were fighting to keep hierarchy alive.
And now we are watching people trade their humanity for proximity to power, wrapping cruelty in flags, crosses, crystals, and “good vibes.”
That is not spirituality.
That is supremacy with incense burning.".

Black Panther Party: Self-Defense and the Experience of Communal Organization at the Center of Capitalism – Academy of Democratic Modernity
Communal organization is a form of organization that socialist movements around the world have debated for a long time and, in some cases, attempted to put into practice. Abdullah Öcalan defines the commune as a form of organization that exists entirely outside the structure of the state, has no connection to it, and in which...
