Today is Earth Overshoot Day.
But âhumanityâ did not collectively decide to consume the equivalent of 1.73 Earths. A subsistence farmer, a fossil-fuel corporation and a billionaire crossing the planet by private jet are not equally responsible.
Blaming humanity is politically convenient. It turns a coercive system into the moral failure of an imagined collective subject.
The deeper contradiction is temporal: between the clock of capital and the times of life.
Forests must grow, soils must recover, aquifers must refill and bodies must rest. Capital measures them all by a single clock: the accelerating rhythm of accumulation.
When the time of profit and expansion is imposed upon the time of regeneration, every delay becomes a barrier and the future becomes fuel.
The Earth does not overshoot itself. Capital does.

Surprise! This month, I joined the Better Future Media family, covering stories through a future-facing lens, and my first piece is now live.
Itâs been a different challenge for me as a writer: Iâm not only surgically dissecting issues but also interrogating the responses â Whoâs doing what about it? Why is it important? How effective will it be?
Most importantly, writing for this publication, Iâm posing to myself a question that many journalists take for granted: What do I want readers to take with them after they leave the story? Youâll find that section included at the bottom of every post.
Happy reading!
